From Lifts to Art: Dual’s Family-Fueled Adventure in Crafting “breathe”

It goes without saying — we take great pride in our ability to adapt and rise to the occasion, even when projects push us outside our usual scope. Recently, Dual’s team had a unique opportunity to work on a project that showcased our skills and also highlighted the close-knit relationships within our organisation. We are thrilled to share our involvement in the installation of breathe, a stunning artwork by the renowned artist Melissa Cameron, sister of Justine Lange, one of our valued team members.

While our primary focus lies in the lift industry, projects like this allow us to demonstrate the versatility of our workshops. Dual’s wood and metal shops collaborated closely on this specialised project, proving that our expertise extends beyond traditional applications. Moments like these reveal the broader scope of work we can undertake, with recent projects like the QV1 Lobby and Bathroom fit-out serving as additional examples of our capabilities.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was witnessing the collaboration between sisters Melissa and Justine. Justine shared her thoughts on working with her sister:

“Working with my big sister Melissa is actually quite easy. We come from a large family of eight, so we are used to working together towards a common goal in high-pressure situations. Compared to preparing Christmas dinner, this job was a joy to work on! Working on-site or in a noisy workshop is far more predictable than having dozens of family members around.”

Justine added: “Melissa’s instructions and work plans are visually crystal clear. Her artwork and jewellery are always made to a very high standard, so when I saw the large size of her latest project, I knew Dual would be the best company for the job. We applied the same manufacturing and installation methods that we use on lift interiors to create ‘breathe.’ It was crucial for us to ensure that the artwork not only looked great but was made from strong and archival materials to guarantee it can be displayed for many years to come with minimal care.”

Melissa Cameron is a highly respected artist, with her work exhibited globally, including collections at the National Gallery of Australia and the University of Iowa Museum of Art. Her latest piece, breathe, is an abstract representation of the inhalation and exhalation processes vital to life.

In her artist statement, Melissa describes the piece: “The work, entitled breathe, represents through its form and colour a pair of interlinked systems continuously at work in the human body, inhalation, and exhalation. The wall features large, pixelated circles interconnected via a stream of smaller circles—enamel roundels—in alternating colours of blue/greens and burnt orange/purples in high saturation.”

Her intricate design incorporates binary encoding to convey words related to breathing, such as “inhale” and “exhale,” symbolising the connection between these essential functions.

This project resonates with art enthusiasts and with the entire Perth community, for that matter. Having artworks like Melissa’s integrated into public spaces is vital for enriching our local culture and promoting engagement. We are proud to have played a role in bringing “Breathe” to life, further illustrating that Dual’s workforce has the skills and tools to deliver exceptional results, no matter the challenge.

At Dual, we are not just about lifts. We are about creativity, collaboration, and community. Projects like “Breathe” reaffirm our commitment to excellence and innovation, and we look forward to more opportunities that challenge us and showcase our diverse capabilities. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Melissa Cameron and her team for this incredible achievement, and we are excited for the community to experience her artistic vision at Murdoch Square.
